Private Practice: (November 1989 to present). Robert F. Mehl, III, Ph.D.
& Assoc., Rockwall, TX. Behavioral medicine consultations with med/surg
patients, evaluation and treatment of hospitalized psychiatric patients,
evaluation and treatment of hospitalized chronic pain patients, and
outpatient office practice treating wide range of emotional disorders.
Assistant Professor (July 1987 to November 1989). University of Texas,
Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, Division of Psychology. Clinical
position as Licensed Psychologist with P.R.I.D.E., a chronic back injury
rehabilitation center. Performed intelligence, personality, and mental
status evaluations as well as short term counseling with individuals both
in English and Spanish. Ran support groups and taught structured classes
on a variety of topics including assertiveness training and R.E.T. Did
neuropsychological screening batteries.
Clinical Psychology Intern (September 1985 to September 1986). Veterans
Administration Medical Center, Danville, Illinois. Primary rotations with
the Outpatient Clinic, the Alcohol and Drug Detoxification and Rehabilitation
Units, and the Psychiatric Inpatient Units. Psychological testing,
individual therapy, group therapy, and hospitalization screening. Secondary
rotations with the Center for Children's Services (Danville, Indiana), and
the Indianapolis Heart Institute (Indianapolis, Indiana). Play therapy,
family therapy, parent training groups. Risk factor evaluation with cardiac
patients. Co-led Type A and hypertension groups.
Psychological Associate (September 1983 to May 1984). Adult Psychological
Services Center, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Staff Member.
Duties included conducting initial client interviews (intakes), individual,
conjoint, and group therapy with clients presenting concerns of sexual
difficulties, depression, bulimia, inadequate social skills, interpersonal
relationships, and alcohol abuse, case presentation and community outreach
(text anxiety workshops).
Assertiveness Training Group (1983, 7 weeks). Purdue Psychological Services
Center. Served as co-leader of a structured assertion skills training group.
Supervision was via observation of videotaped sessions.
Human Resource Developer (October 1980 to September 1981). Office of
Resource Development, Department of Mental Health, Lansing, Michigan.
Coordinated statewide Continuing Medical Education committee and organized
several workshops for psychiatrists. Coordinated statewide Continuing

psychiatrists. Coordinated the planning of continuing education programs
for (non-mental health) primary health care providers on the subjects of
alcohol, drug, and mental health problems as well as organized several
statewide workshops for physicians and nurses.
Training Director (May 1979 to October 1980). Michigan Institute of Mental
Health, Dimondale, Michigan. Administrative position to facility director.
Responsible for coordinating, planning and supervising training for all staff
at a psychiatric hospital. Supervised three trainers. Developed orientation
and continuing training/education policies and programs. Taught many of the
daily staff development classes. Attended extensive training for trainers
classes taught by the Department of Mental Health.
Assistant Professor (June 1978 to September 1981). Department of
Psychiatry, Michigan State University. Taught "Doctor-Patient Transaction
Interviewing" to medical students for several terms. Team taught "Minority
Issues in Health Care" with Dr. Thomas Gunnings. In preparation for the
latter course, I observed interactions between medical students and Mexican-
American patients during the summer of 1979 at a Migrant Health Clinic.
Supervised psychiatric resident in group therapy at Michigan Institute for
Mental Health. Taught "Special Studies in Assertiveness Training" to
graduate social work intern.
Clinical Instructor (June 1978 to May 1979). School of Social Work,
Michigan State University. Supervised graduate intern at inpatient unit of
Michigan Institute for Mental Health.
Clinical Social Worker (June 1978 to May 1979). Michigan Institute for
Mental Health, Dimondale, Michigan. Psychiatric inpatient work with
psychotic, suicidal and borderline adults in teaching hospital affiliated
with M.S.U. School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. Responsible for
mental status and psychosocial evaluations, case management and continuity
of care. Some patients individual and group therapy. Led relatives'
groups and time-limited relaxation training groups.
Trainer (May 1978). Imperial Valley College. Division of Nursing
Education, Imperial, California. Taught "Assertiveness Training for
Nurses" in an all-day workshop which covered job-related communication
skills so nurses may communicate more effectively with doctors, supervisors,
employees, and administrators.
Therapist (197 to 1978). Private practice of psychotherapy and marriage
counseling. Part-time.
Couples Assertiveness Training (1977 to 1978). Developed six week course
in private practice collaboration with Jan Swanson, A.C.S.W., which we taught
several times to groups of couples. Covered dealing with anger and
criticism, giving meaningful affection, having fun together, and sexuality.
Developed manual based on above.
Therapist (July 1973 to May 1978). Imperial County Community Mental Health,
Brawley, California. Individual, group, child, couple, and family therapy at
Outpatient Clinic with clients having psychiatric, alcohol, and/or drug
problems. Some of therapy carried out in Spanish, including running a
Spanish-speaking group. Team member at inpatient psychiatric unit where I
performed social histories, crisis counseling, and aftercare planning.
Group therapist at inpatient unit with psychotic and suicidal patients and at
Day Treatment Center with schizophrenics. Supervised M.S.W. in preparation
for his licensure over extended period.
Inservice Training Coordinator (1977 to 1978). Imperial County Community
Mental Health. Lecturer at staff inservice training numerous times. Planned
inservice program year round with in-house and out-of-town speakers. Led
group therapy for psychiatric inpatient hospital staff interested in personal
growth. Taught assertiveness training skills to clerical staff.
Instructor (1974 to 1978). Imperial Valley College, Imperial, California.
Taught "Social-Psychology of Men and Women". This was a course which
examined relationships between the sexes, marriage, and the family. Taught
"Assertiveness Training" five semesters with Jan Swanson, A.C.S.W.

Psychological Clinic. duties included initial interview and short and
long-term therapy with children, parents, and families. Therapeutic
approaches included cognitive behavior modification, play therapy, and
marital therapy.
